Willie Jooste, a teacher and 'king of the outdoors' at York High School, maintains that every outing embarked on by the school is a meticulously planned getaway with the growth of the child in mind.
"I like to compare life with one of the most challenging outdoor activities undertaken by York - abseiling. The fear of the unknown is clearly seen on the faces of the children as they await their turn to try something new and challenging. Abseiling is a sophisticated test that is never forced on the learners, yet, with the correct verbal encouragement, very few actually refuse to try it.
"While in free space meters above the ground contemplating your next strategic move, you appreciate that your future is anchored and moulded by those around you. You are on your own, yet you are encouraged by the team that is determined to see you succeed. In abseiling you must trust your equipment and those around you but, just like life, the final decision is still yours. You, and only you, have the responsibility to test the ropes."
The unwavering support of the headmasters, past and present, the management team of the school and the school governing body have ensured that the tradition of the York outdoor activities has become an integral part of the school.
"When we return from our outdoor pursuits, you can feel the respect that is now part of the learner’s psyche. The perception of the all-knowing and all-conquering teenager is tempered by the reality of the trip and the experience. Our outdoor interaction, which concentrates on respecting the different abilities that each learner brings to the team to form the tight-knit unit, is emphasised as a strength rather than a weakness."
Jooste maintains that the bonding that takes place gives the teacher the added advantage to be able to interact with the learner on a deeper level when academic encouragement is needed.
The location of the outing, whether it is at Kaaimans, the Swartberg Mountains near Oudtshoorn, or river rafting down the Orange River, is incidental to the experience and knowledge gained. The character building and bonds formed and the process of problem solving will always be with these Yorkies and will stand them in good stead for years to come.
