GEORGE NEWS - Neither the local ANC nor the DA in George has planned anything special in memory of the late former president Nelson Mandela, one year after his death on 5 December 2013.
“Come to my house, this is an all day affair,” invited a friendly Piet van der Hoven, ANC-councillor at George Municipality, on an inquiry from the George Herald.
The ANC’s Chief Whip, Charlie Williams confirmed that there is nothing planned in George for the first anniversary of Madiba’s death.
Putco Mapitiza, ANC-secretary for the Southern Cape, could not be reached for comment.
According to Jaco Londt, DA-MP and constituency head of George and Knysna, the municipality prefer to focus on Mandela’s date of birth, 18 July. “George Municipality is currently focusing on the roll out of the GO GEORGE public transport service which starts on Monday,” he said.
However, the DA has planned a workshop for tomorrow morning, with the sub-management for all six branches in Thembalethu and the one in Lawaaikamp. The election of the management, as well as the workshop, will take place at the Thembalethu Civic Centre. “We are very excited about this,” said Londt. “If we can extend our footprint to Thembalethu, and gain more than 60% of the votes in Council, it will increase the political stability of the town,” he said.
