GEORGE NEWS - Two children from George, aged 12 and 9, were rescued from a dangerous rip current at Herold's Bay on Wednesday afternoon, 8 January, thanks to the quick actions of local lifeguards and two heroic teenagers.
According to Jonathan Britton, NSRI Wilderness station commander, the incident occurred at 16:10 when the NSRI Wilderness duty crew received a call for assistance from George Municipal NSRI lifeguards, who were already engaged in a surf rescue operation.
The children were caught in a rip current while swimming, prompting two teenagers, aged 15 and 18, to spring into action.
The teens, swimming in the designated safer swimming area monitored by lifeguards, noticed the children in distress and immediately went to their aid.
At the same time, lifeguards spotted the unfolding emergency and launched a coordinated response.
"The lifeguards, together with the two Good Samaritans, assisted the two children safely to the beach," said Britton.
In a further precautionary measure, one lifeguard went beyond the breakers to ensure no additional swimmers were in danger. He remained offshore, staying afloat while surveying the area until the NSRI rescue craft arrived to bring him safely back to land.
The rescue effort also saw a multi-agency response, including the Metro ambulance services, the George fire and rescue services, and the police.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported among the children, the teenagers, or the lifeguards involved.
“NSRI commends the two Good Samaritans, who we have not been able to identify, for their efforts that contributed to saving the lives of the two children, together with the lifeguards,” said Britton.
