GEORGE NEWS - A memorial service for former George councillor Johan Stander (76) will be held at the DR Mother Church in George at 10:30 on Saturday 24 October.
Stander passed away on Sunday night, 18 October, following a battle with cancer.
His family and friends remember him as a man of integrity who cared deeply for his community and treasured the time spent with those closest to him.
His family shared some fond memories of the role he played in their lives and the lasting impact he had on those around him.
“We will always remember him as a devoted husband, loving father and proud grandfather. He was a man of his word, guided by strong values and principles, yet always had a soft spot for those less fortunate. His love, kindness and steadfast presence meant so much to us.
“He leaves a void that can never be filled, but his example and the precious memories we shared with him will remain with us forever.”
Former George mayor Leon van Wyk, a close friend and former colleague, described Stander as a man of exceptional honesty and integrity who always tried to do what was right. “We were incredibly good friends. We lived close to each other, saw each other almost daily, and our families were very close. He was a man of principle who believed in doing the right thing and living his life accordingly. He genuinely cared about people, particularly those who were struggling, and always wanted to help.”
Valuable contribution
Van Wyk recalled Stander’s valuable contribution during his time on the George Municipal Council, particularly his ability to bring people together and facilitate discussions on complex development and infrastructure matters.
During Van Wyk’s term as mayor, Stander played an important role in discussions surrounding the development of Mediclinic George, including infrastructure challenges and the traffic circles at the York Street entrance.
“I encouraged him to continue facilitating discussions and acting as a bridge between the municipal administration and the community. He took that responsibility seriously and was exceptionally good at it, particularly in his dealings with the civil engineering directorate.”
Stander joined the George Municipal Council in 2011 and served in various positions, including as mayoral committee member for planning and development and later for civil engineering.
He was also well known in the construction and property industries and remained actively involved in property development until recently.
Away from his professional responsibilities, Stander enjoyed playing tennis and meeting friends for coffee. However, one of his greatest pleasures was spending time with his grandchildren.
“He absolutely loved being a grandfather,” Van Wyk recalled.
George Mayor Browen Johnson also paid tribute to Stander, who was awarded the title of alderman in November 2025, in recognition of his years of service to the municipality.
“Rest in eternal peace, Oom Johan. You will be deeply missed, and your contribution to our community will not be forgotten.”
The DA announced his passing on Monday evening, 19 October, paying tribute to his years of service to the George community and extending condolences to his family, friends and former colleagues.
