GEORGE NEWS - In an all-out rescue in rough seas, crew of the NSRI Wilderness and Mossel Bay, along with a private vessel owner, went to the aid of a floundering DAFF research vessel on Monday 13 August off-shore from Herold’s Bay.
The Derek-1 sent a distress signal, reporting that a rope was entangled around its engine propellers. Derek-1 was dragging anchor in heavy surf and at risk of running aground half a nautical mile off-shore, with 7 crew on board in heavy, 3-meter sea swells. The rope had to be cut loose to make the Derek-1 operational again.
