GEORGE NEWS - There was a buoyant atmosphere at The South Cape Association of Visual Art's (Scava) Expression of Happiness art competition prize-giving held at Xanadu, Tersia Hoffman's seaside guesthouse in Wilderness.
Addressing the small gathering, Wilderness artist and art teacher Hein Botha conveyed his philosophical view on the feelings that art can evoke.
The fourteen prize-winning paintings can currently be seen at The Views Restaurant in the Views Boutique Hotel in Wilderness.
Prize winners
The winner of the annual competition is Rosanne van Niekerk with her graphite and charcoal entry When you're smiling. This exquisite self-portrait earned her the R1 000 cash prize and a R750 Artsavingclub gift voucher.
Zané Small won the second prize, R500 cash and R500 Artsavingclub voucher for her painting titled At Rainbow's End; and Linda Murison won the third prize (R250 cash) for her art piece Having a Break. She also won a R250 Artsavingsclub voucher and the Scava trophy.
Special merit prizes went to Annalene Lindeque for her portrait of her mother titled Small treasure. Annalene, who is a graphic design artist employed at Group Editors as a layout artist, was thrilled to get recognition as a fine artist.
Former George Herald journalist Pauline Lourens won a merit prize.
The Spies Venter Trophy was won by Tanja Lategan, for the Aspiring Novice category. There were 14 prizes altogether, sponsored by Artsavingsclub, Little Art Shop and Karin Malan.
