GEORGE NEWS - Balloons laughter, and a big slice of history. That's how Groenkloof marked its 20th birthday as residents, friends, and visitors came together to celebrate a journey that began in 2005 with a single estate in Great Brak River.
Today, Groenkloof has grown into seven thriving retirement communities, with Groenkloof Seesig set to join the family when sales open in September 2025.
In George, celebrations kicked off at The Hub House, where the popular Michael Lindt set the tone with a lively soundtrack. Residents enjoyed complementary tea and coffee; an impressive 357 cups were served, as balloons, music, and laughter filled the air. Some even took to the dance floor, adding sparkle to the joyful atmosphere.
Local clubs joined in the fun. Rummikub, Canasta, and other card players decorated their tables, while the Vlytige Vingers knitting group hosted a stitch-a-thon with their partner charities.
A highlight was 92-year-old Lena Mattheus, who has knitted an astonishing 1 000 beanies this past year for premature babies.
The fun walk drew 103 entries, with one determined participant completing the full 20km.
Outdoors, residents enjoyed lawn games, while Klippieklas and the pottery club created special artworks to mark the milestone.
These pieces, unveiled by Jan Fourie, chairman of the Groenkloof George Association, are now proudly displayed outside the studios.
It was a celebration not only of two decades past, but of the vibrant, creative and caring community that will carry Groenkloof forward for decades to come.
