GEORGE NEWS - The Garden Route Innovation and Technology Hub (GRIT Hub), a non-profit dedicated to fostering innovation and entrepreneurship in the digital economy, is significantly expanding its impact across the Garden Route.
The Hub launched a student chapter at the Nelson Mandela University's George Campus, hosted a transformative AI masterclass, partnered with a Child and Youth Care Centre (CYCC) and delivered AI workshops for small to medium enterprises (SMEs) in collaboration with the George Business Chamber.
The new student chapter opened on 15 April marks a pivotal step in engaging the region's youth in technopreneurship and provides access to the hub's resources, including masterclasses, workshops and mentorship, fostering digital skills and entrepreneurial thinking. "The student chapter is a catalyst for innovation," said Marshall Grant, the Hub's founder and CEO.
"By collaborating with Nelson Mandela University, we're equipping students to drive economic growth in the Garden Route."

The following Thursday, the Hub hosted an AI masterclass at the university, engaging over 100 students in an interactive exploration of AI, highlighting AI's practical applications, from business solutions to environmental sustainability.
"This is only the beginning of a lot more to come," said Udy Obi, a former student of the university and now an associate of the hub.
In partnership with the Outeniqua CYCC, the Hub equipped vulnerable youth with foundational digital skills and mentorship. The learners began by completing an interactive career guidance questionnaire made available through the MTN Skills Academy, which helped identify their interests and potential career paths within the digital economy. They were then introduced to key concepts in digital literacy, personal finance, entrepreneurship and emerging technology fields such as coding, IT support and digital marketing. "Our work with the CYCC reflects our belief that everyone deserves access to the tools of the future," said Grant.

The Hub collaborated with the business chamber to deliver AI workshops that empowered over 60 SMEs in the Garden Route. These workshops, designed to demystify AI for small business owners, covered practical tools to enhance operations, marketing and customer engagement. Participants gained hands-on experience with AI platforms, enabling them to compete in a digital economy. "AI isn't just for big corporations - it's a game-changer for SMEs," Grant noted. "Our partnership with the business chamber is helping local businesses thrive."

The Hub invites students, businesses and community members to join its growing ecosystem. Visit grithub.org.za or contact the team at workforce@grithub.org.za to get involved.
