Headmaster Dennis Symes said that the mammoth task of organising the GKC for the Grade 10 pupils who will be embarking on a 550km, 17 day journey through the Karoo is in its final stages.
The GKC involves cycling, hiking and paddling and is an important milestone in the development of the pupil's character.
Symes told the pupils that earlier this year Glenwood House School did some soul searching to determine "who we are and what our gifts are". He said that "after some hours of debating and discussing our circumstances we started to list our gifts, skills and talents".
The list grew, but they narrowed it down to the following three basic points: firstly, Glenwood House School inspires an all-round education. Secondly, the school provides a foothold in the life journey for pupils to discover their purpose and full potential and lastly they educate young adults who are sustainably committed to themselves and their communities.
On Monday during the school assembly, which marked 60 days to the start of the GKC, Symes told the school, "At Glenwood House School we recognise that we are blessed and the GKC project spearheads our social responsibility. It is therefore right that we should share with and care for our community and environment. We want to share our blessings and reach out to other communities because we believe that together we are stronger."
The GKC will continue the tradition of visiting schools in the rural areas that have challenges. Last year they paid a visit to Vermaaklikheid Christian School near Heidelberg where Glenwood House previously assisted the school with maintenance, repairs, the building of walls, building an additional toilet, as well as contributions of learning material. This year Vondeling Primary School in Witsand will be visited in the outreach programme.
