Fifty Grade 10 learners started a magnificent journey that will take them through some of the most beautiful scenery in the Karoo. They will be facing the elements to complete one of the most defining experiences in their young lives. No cellphones and no technological distractions; no parents; no luxuries.
ut there in the Karoo they will cry, laugh and get to know themselves much better. They will discover facets about their personalities they never would have discovered otherwise and they will learn that they are capable of so much more than they usually give themselves credit for.
It is an experience that boosts self-esteem, strengthens self-confidence and promotes a healthy outlook on life. Learners rarely go through this experience and remain immune to change. After three years of doing this challenge its benefits - for the learners and for the school - cannot be questioned.
No learner gets left behind. There is a significant support system that makes it possible for them to succeed, but they do every-thing themselves. In addition to the seven accompanying teachers there are doctors and members of Eden Disaster Management on the journey with the learners. Helicopter support is ready and waiting in case it is needed; logistics for this journey is significant. The learners are prepared for the challenge during the year physically (hikes and cycling) and skills lessons re-riding and maintaining bicycles, pitching tents and other skills they will need to finish the journey successfully. Everything is aimed at providing the learners with the opportunity to complete the trip.
This year Glenwood House Private School is doing its fourth Karoo Challenge and 50 learners embarked on a journey of 550km. The journey will take 18 days and they will be completing this distance through hiking, cycling and canoeing. It will start in 'Die Hel' and end at Reins Nature Reserve where they will finish the last few kilometres with a hike along the beach. They will visit Vermaaklikheid Christian School on route and assist the school with maintenance (repairing and painting), building new facilities, handing over stationery, bags and gifts etc.
Become part of the experience by following our warriors on their journey – just key in 'Glenwood Karoo Challenge' on Facebook and you will be able to enjoy the remarks, videos and pictures of the journey as it progresses.
