GEORGE NEWS - George Municipality has expressed deep sadness at the passing of Ward 7 Councillor, Vulindlela Solomon Mruqhli, who died on Saturday 13 June, at the age of 63 following a short illness.
Councillor Mruqhli joined the George Municipal Council in 2021 as the African National Congress (ANC) representative for Ward 7.
During his tenure, he served on both the Corporate Services Portfolio Committee and the George Integrated Public Transport Network (GIPTN) Portfolio Committee. He was widely respected for his commitment to community representation and his contribution to council processes.
Mayor Browen Johnson paid tribute to the late councillor, describing him as a dedicated public servant and respected leader.
“Today, we remember Cllr Mruqhli not only as a committed councillor, but also as a sharp-witted leader, devoted family man, and wise elder whose counsel was valued by all who worked with him. His humility, dignity and unwavering dedication to his community have left a lasting mark,” said Johnson.
Acting Municipal Manager Bevan Ellman also extended condolences, saying Councillor Mruqhli served the people of George with distinction.
"His commitment to public service, institutional knowledge, and ability to build relationships across communities and within Council earned him the respect of colleagues, officials and residents alike. His passing is a great loss to the municipality,” he said.
The municipality has extended its condolences to the Mruqhli family, friends, fellow councillors, the ANC, and residents of Ward 7 during this time of bereavement. He is survived by his wife and children.
