GEORGE NEWS - George Hospital celebrated International Nurses’ Day on 12 May by paying tribute to the dedication, compassion and resilience of its nursing staff.
This year’s theme, “Our nurses. Our future. Empowered nurses save lives”, highlighted the critical role nurses play in healthcare systems worldwide.
At George Hospital, 395 nurses serve on the frontline of patient care, supporting residents throughout every stage of life while helping strengthen the public healthcare system in the Southern Cape.
Nurses are central to person-centred care and often provide reassurance during difficult moments and acting as an important link between patients, families, communities and the broader health system.
Nurses also form the largest professional group within the public health sector, which is a reflection of their extensive contribution across hospitals, clinics, community-based services, emergency care, specialist units and public health programmes.
George Hospital recognised its nursing staff not only as caregivers, but also as leaders, educators and advocates within the healthcare environment.
The CEO, Tshepo Kau, thanked nurses for their unwavering commitment to patient care.
“Without you there is no healthcare system. Your resilience and commitment to patient care over the last two weeks and each and every day is admirable. I can never thank you and your families enough for the selfless sacrifice to care and serve our patients. Ke a leboga, Modimo ale tshegofatse!” he said.
All hospital staff were treated to cake as part of the celebration.
