GEORGE NEWS - The George Golf Club has officially reopened its back nine holes following the extensive storm damage that struck the course last week.
Speaking on Tuesday 19 May, events co-ordinator Marelize Piek said the golf course lost a total of 263 trees during the severe weather conditions.
“Despite the damage, the course remains true to the tree-rich character for which it is well known,” she said.

“When we arrived here on Tuesday morning, the damage was extensive. We officially reopened the back nine today [19 May], while clean-up operations continue on the front nine. If all goes according to plan, we hope to reopen all 18 holes next week.”
Piek explained that although many trees were lost, visitors will still recognise the course’s distinctive layout and natural beauty. “George is known for its tree-lined course, and there are still plenty of trees remaining. Visitors who have played here before will even still find some of their well-known ‘problem trees’ on the course,” she joked.
The club’s immediate focus remains on restoring the course itself before the attention shifts to additional repairs, including damaged fencing and infrastructure.
Piek recalled several tense moments during the storm as large branches crashed down around the property. “There were a few frightening moments. We saw branches falling in front of us. There was also a tour group that had arrived, but could not play. Fortunately, we evacuated the course in time and everyone remained safe.”

Piek said the recovery effort has been a true team undertaking. She and the bookkeeper, Chantelle Terblanche, praised the dedication of the grounds staff.
“If it were not for Vickus Filmalter, the course superintendent, and his team, we would not have been where we are today,” said Terblanche. “Everyone who could help stepped in and assisted.”
The clean-up and restoration work continues as the club works towards reopening the full course in the coming days.
