GEORGE NEWS - George resident and jewellery designer Reinette Edgar has been named among the top 10 finalists in the professional category of the 2026 PlatAfrica jewellery design competition.
The finalists were announced at Jewellex Africa at the Gallagher Convention Centre on 6 September.
Edgar, co-owner of Goldfish Jewellery Design Studio in George, was selected for her piece, The Navigator, created in response to this year's theme, 'Equilibrium'.
The platinum piece incorporates 0.65ct natural diamonds, London Blue Topaz, Swiss Blue Topaz and rainbow moonstone, with colour created using HyCeramic by Invekon.
Edgar describes The Navigator as a representation of the "internal navigator" that guides people through life. "We bob about like paper boats on diamond waves. Our compass elements are as integrated as our shadow guide, the internal navigator."
The design also reflects the fleeting nature of life. Edgar drew inspiration from the lunar moth and a drop of water. "Finding virtue, passion and the love of life keeps the equilibrium between what is and what will be," she said.

The PlatAfrica competition, hosted by Valterra Platinum, in partnership with Platinum Guild International and Metal Concentrators, challenges professional and student designers to create jewellery using platinum.
Edgar's selection places a George-based designer among 10 professional finalists from across South Africa. She and her husband and business partner, Zak, have worked together in the jewellery industry since 2002. Their George studio has previously drawn inspiration from the Garden Route's natural environment.
Reinette said the competition was tough, and that reaching the national top 10 was a great honour.
The winners in the professional and student categories will be announced at the PlatAfrica 2026 awards ceremony on 6 November. Finalists will also compete for the people's choice award.
