GEORGE NEWS - Plans for the multi billion rand mega development Destiny Africa have been rekindled, a decade since the project's public introduction in 2009.
Speaking on behalf of the developers, Loot Steyn from Eden Meander developers Laritza Investments said the turning of the soil will be taking place on Monday on the land earmarked for the development opposite the Garden Route Mall on the eastern side of the N2.
Destiny Africa had the backing of the former Western Cape Premier Helen Zille at the time of its launch at the start of a major worldwide recession. It was then valued at R28-bn. By 2011, developers were still keeping hope alive that the project would go ahead despite a struggle to draw investors. It was then valued at R45-bn and at that stage possible black empowerment investors were mentioned.
According to Steyn, Chinese investors have now come on board and the development has the backing of the national government.
Steyn said the original vision for the development - to create a mini-city covering 437 hectares - is still the same. One of the main attractions will be facilities similar to a Hollywood for South Africa where international films can be made. It will be called 'Sallywood'. The original plans included residential, commercial and hotel accommodation components, an international convention centre, sport centre, a university and sport science centre.
