GEORGE NEWS - The residents of Thembalethu were shocked and outraged by an incident on Saturday 9 May, during which, according to unofficial information, a small-scale farmer allegedly dumped several dead calves on a pavement next to the main road, possibly with the intention that the meat was to be used by the residents.
It has further been alleged that the calves had died as a result of neglect and poor care. The farmer's identity remains unknown.
Law enforcement officers of the George Municipality responded to the scene and removed the carcasses.
Photos and videos shared on social media have confirmed the public's disgust and dismay over the incident.
George Municipality's comment on the matter is still being awaited.
Garden Route SPCA commented on the matter as follows:
On 9 May the Garden Route SPCA responded to a concerning complaint regarding calf bodies being dumped in Thembalethu.
Upon arriving at the premises where the calves were being kept, GRSPCA Inspector Pypers discovered two additional deceased calves.
The remaining eight live calves were then removed into the care of GRSPCA for examination, assessment and ongoing care.
The deceased calves were also taken in as part of the investigation process and for post-mortem examination. The circumstances surrounding this case are currently being investigated in conjunction with Law Enforcement authorities.
Members of the public are encouraged to contact the Garden Route SPCA should they have any concerns relating to animal welfare, cruelty, neglect, or animals in distress.
