GEORGE NEWS - Many new Georgians may not be aware of the large retirement community living just off York Street where most residents have not entirely hung up their boots yet, but are actively participating in regular activities and entertaining socials.
Meet the George Service Clubs Utility Company (alias the Round Table, Lions and Rotary George clubs) at this community's helm. They established the company in April 1970 as a non-profit to develop a retirement village.
Under management of a board of directors, five blocks were developed over the years: RLR Centre (1980), Murray House (1986), Rendezvous Cottages (1991), Kay Barron (2003), and Lyttelton Health Care Centre, offering frail care and palliative and respite care.
The management team oversees the smooth running of operations and ensures that residents receive the necessary support and care.
"We aim to create a well-organised and compassionate environment with high service standards. The quality of life of our residents is important to us.
" We offer comfortable and affordable housing, essential services such as meals and nursing, and a strong sense of community," says Mariza van der Merwe, the general manager.
"The service centre is the heartbeat of our community. This is where residents stay active, interact socially and take part in fun activities such as fitness sessions, arts and crafts, and games.
"We make sure there is always something to look forward to. It is a warm, welcoming space where everyone belongs."
The library corner is very popular. It also features a cosy corner with comfortable seating to sit and read. Dezi Evans (left) and Lesley Welch are regulars.
Regular activities include Bible study, the Vintage Rose Shop with second-hand clothes, a tuck shop, knitting group, shopping trips, games evenings, and exercise sessions. There is also an on-site hairdresser.
A monthly get-together is hosted on a rotational basis by the different house committees. "It is a budget-friendly social where guests enjoy coffee, tea and treats and funds raised go towards supporting the house committees," says Van der Merwe.
Service centre coordinator Angelique Botha, assisted by a committee, is responsible for the activities and entertainment. Fundraising events are also held to supplement the company's income.
Enquiries from people interested in the living options or upcoming events are welcomed. Contact them on 044 874 7494 or send an e-mail to manager@georgeserviceclubs.co.za.
The office is located at 117A York Street.
