GEORGE NEWS - It is nothing short of a miracle that no lives were lost in the most recent serious accident on the N2 near Wilderness when a taxi crash-landed on the railway track on Tuesday morning, 14 December.
According to initial information the taxi, carrying 10 passengers, was travelling from the direction of George when it collided with a Toyota Hilux bakkie that was turning right into the Wilderness village from the opposite side.
The taxi, with a CAW registration number, veered across the road, crashed through the barrier of the railway bridge and landed on its wheels on the railway track between Sands Road and the N2. The bakkie came to a standstill on the concrete island on the N2.
Emergency services including provincial traffic, Metro Rescue Services, ER24 paramedics and local police were quick to respond to the scene. On arrival seven people were found lying outside the taxi, while five were still inside.
The driver and the passengers in the taxi sustained mild to serious injuries and were transported to hospital. The driver of the bakkie escaped with minor injuries. He was the only person in the vehicle.
Further details surrounding the accident could not be confirmed by the time of going to print.
