GEORGE NEWS - As we begin a new year, many people set goals that improve their lives. But some resolutions can also improve other people’s lives, such as becoming a regular blood donor.
That’s why the Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) is asking current donors, new donors, and those who haven’t given in a while to make 2026 the year they commit to donating blood.
Blood is needed every day across the Western Cape: for surgeries, childbirth, cancer treatment, trauma care and more. The demand never stops, and the number of regular donors is always crucial. A single donation can save up to three lives.
To help meet this ongoing need, WCBS has launched its 2026 Commitment Campaign under the theme Share the Gift of Life. The goal is to shift the mindset from one-off giving to regular donation, helping ensure hospitals always have lifesaving blood on hand.
“Starting the year with a commitment to donate blood is more than just a resolution. It’s a promise to save lives throughout the year,” says Marike Carli, public relations manager at WCBS.
“Donating blood takes about 30 minutes, and yet the impact lasts much longer for the patients who depend on that donation.”

Why your donation matters

• The WCBS runs regular clinics in George and throughout the Western Cape.
• Donating regularly helps maintain steady blood stocks so that no patient goes without lifesaving treatment.
As part of the 2026 campaign, donors who commit to giving blood at least four times during the year will receive a special limited-edition WCBS coffee plunger and mug as a thank-you for their generous commitment.
