Update
GEORGE NEWS - The Wilderness Ratepayers and Residents Association (WRRA) has announced that the contractors working on the N2 road upgrade between George and Wilderness will shut down for the December holidays, from Friday 12 December until Thursday 8 January.
During the shutdown, traffic circles at Kraaibosch and Victoria Bay will be operational, and the Traffic Department will also provide pointsmen in Wilderness throughout December to help manage the increase in holiday traffic.
According to the WRRA, two lanes in each direction will be open between Kraaibosch and the Wilderness village, where possible, while a single lane in each direction will remain open between the Wilderness village and Die Vleie turn-off.
To the frustration of most road users, major roadworks are currently under way on the N2 between George and Wilderness, including the Kaaimans Pass section, as part of a multimillion-rand upgrade by Sanral.
The completion date is set for somewhere in 2026.
The project involves widening the road to a dual carriageway, constructing new traffic circles at the Victoria Bay and George Road intersections, and stabilising the steep slopes around Kaaimans Gorge, an area prone to erosion and landslides.
While the upgrades aim to improve long-term safety and traffic flow, motorists are advised to expect ongoing delays, reduced speed limits and intermittent lane closures until the project's completion.
A recent photo of the roadworks in Wilderness was taken by Jeff Ayliffe while paragliding.
