GEORGE NEWS - The South Cape Society of Advocates (SCSA), whose members serve as associate members of the Cape Bar, has announced the election of a new bar council.
All members are required to take up chambers in either George or Knysna, subject to Cape Bar approval.
Adv Johan du Toit SC has been elected as chairperson, with Adv Jan Heunis SC as deputy chairperson. Adv Jacques Malan will serve as secretary and Adv Danie van der Merwe as treasurer for the new term.
In addition to its leadership announcement, the society emphasised its ongoing commitment to the broader Southern Cape community.
One of its main goals for the coming year is to engage with public schools to introduce learners to the legal profession.
Through school visits and exposure to court proceedings, the SCSA hopes to highlight career opportunities within law and identify promising learners who may be encouraged and supported to pursue legal studies and potentially join the bar in future.
The society plans to carry out these outreach efforts in partnership with the attorneys' profession to ensure meaningful and co-ordinated engagement.
It will also continue its programme of presenting regular lectures, workshops and training sessions aimed at strengthening the skills of both advocates and attorneys, ultimately improving the standard of legal service available to the public.
