GEORGE NEWS - The George Municipality’s Building Control division recently met with architectural and built environment professionals to strengthen collaboration and streamline building plan approvals.
One of the strongest issues raised was the correct completion of SANS 10400 forms, which underpin professional accountability in construction projects.
Officials stressed that incomplete, outdated or misaligned forms remain one of the leading causes of delays. Forms 1 to 4 – covering professional declarations, appointments of competent persons, design responsibilities and completion certificates – must be completed fully and correctly before an application can progress.
The municipality reminded professionals that it accepts appointments but does not verify competency.
Professionals, in turn, raised concerns about turnaround times, communication delays, and difficulties accessing historic approved plans. They also highlighted the challenge of taking responsibility for undocumented or concealed work in older buildings, calling for clearer guidance.
Municipal Manager of Building Control Fickerie Toyer said that compliance and clear communication are vital for efficient service delivery and safer communities. “These engagements are vital in ensuring accountability," he said, adding that future sessions will be hosted twice a year.
