GEORGE NEWS - George Municipality would like to alert the public to a fraudulent housing rental scheme currently circulating in the George area.

A recent case involved a Facebook user searching for rental properties in George who was contacted by an individual identifying himself as Hendrik Van Zyl. 

Hendrik claimed that new houses were available in Borchards and provided a contact number, 084 080 5945, supposedly linked to a municipal contact named Jackie. 

When the number was called, a woman identifying herself as Jann answered, shared videos of houses, and demanded immediate payment. 

She further misrepresented that “Jackie” is the Mayor of George Municipality in an attempt to make the arrangement appear credible.

This is a scam. The matter has been reported to the Mayor’s office.

George Municipality reminds the public that neither the Municipality, the Mayor, nor any councillors are involved in renting out properties or requesting rental payments.

• Be cautious of unsolicited rental offers.
• Verify information through official channels before making any payments.
• Report suspicious activity immediately to the South African Police Service (SAPS).
