GEORGE NEWS - Runners and walkers will soon again get to take part in the fourth annual Run it Back fundraising campaign, a seven-day marathon to raise funds for the beneficiaries of the non-profit organisation, Empower.
The official launch was held at Caloroso Roaster and Eatery on Tuesday 16 September when Empower’s director, David May, announced it would be held from Saturday to Saturday, 23 to 29 November.
Last year’s Run it Back raised enough funds to assist Princess Nkqayi, the owner of a preschool in Thembalethu, Selindele Baby Care, to upgrade the services she offers. “We were able to put up a fence for Princess’ school and plant a vegetable garden, put in artificial grass and create a play area for the kids. She has seen her school grow from 46 kids last year to the current 60,” said May.
Funds raised with this year’s Run it Back event will again be used to assist Nkqayi. The aim is to help her to buy an additional premises adjacent to the school, to enable her to add another classroom. Nkqayi is currently running the preschool from her RDP house.
Participants in the Run it Back must run or walk 5.1km over six consecutive days, and on the last day, all participants gather at Redberry Farm to conclude the marathon together by completing the final 11.6km there.
Participants have to canvas for sponsors for every kilometre they run or walk, each aiming for a target of R5 000.
“The last day is the highlight of the campaign, and even people who don't take part in the marathon are invited to bring their families and enjoy the morning’s fun with us. If they are not raising funds, they are still welcome to take part and post their progress in the marathon on social media,” said May.
“Any support for Empower’s vision is welcome. We try to empower local community heroes by enhancing their ability to continue to impact multiple lives in their community.”
Nearly 50 people have already indicated that they are taking part in the Run it Back. To register for the marathon, scan the accompanying QR code for a link to the WhatsApp group of participants.
