LIFESTYLE NEWS - The University of the Third Age’ (U3A) April programme starts on Wednesday the 15th, with Armchair Travel, when Estelle Frohling talks about hiking in Chilean Patagonia in South America.
Now retired, Frohling enjoys hiking, photography and travelling. She is a member of the Berg en Dal Hiking Club in George. In April 2024, she had this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be part of a hiking group to go hiking in South America for a whole month, and will share these adventure with the attendees.
The meeting starts at 10:30.
On 24 April, in the Friday Talk, Wilhelm van der Vyver will talk about “Vietnam - The Thrill of it All”.
In December 2024, Van der Vyver travelled to Vietnam with his son to visit his brother, Fanie, who has settled permanently in Vietnam and is married to a Vietnamese citizen, Ha Trang, thus providing him with an opportunity to experience the real Vietnam from the inside, and not just from a tourist’s view. Van der Vyver was born in Stellenbosch and is a practising attorney in George, where he has lived since 1997. This meeting will start at 10:30, with refreshments available at 10:00.
In the general meeting on Wednesday 29 April, emeritus associate professor Delva Shamley will talk about “Your cancer has gone; you can go home. What now?”
Cancer survivors are said to be living with a chronic condition. This talk will take attendees through the effects of surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy on health tissues and how these can lead to chronic conditions. This is an aspect of the cancer care programme that is usually not addressed, or very poorly addressed, by the medical team. The talk will provide cues to recognise symptoms early, as well as how to manage them.
Shamley is a physiotherapist, anatomist, histologist and clinical trial manager.
Refreshments are available at 10:00, and the talk will start at 10:30.
