GEORGE NEWS - November is the final month of University of the Third Age (U3A) events for this year as they will be taking a break during December.
They will return to their old "home" at Emmaüs in Memorium Street in January, but all the November events will still take place at the Moth Hall in Rijk Tulbach Street.
Eastern Europe trip
On Wednesday 9 November in Armchair Travel, Jackie Haupt will present part 2 of the trip she and her husband, Neil, undertook to Eastern Europe, cruising the Wild Danube from Giurgiu to Budapest.
Starting in Romania they passed through Bulgaria, Serbia and Croatia to Hungary aboard the River Duchess.
The lower Danube is not as popular with tourists as the section upstream from Budapest. Do not expect pictures of Disney-like castles, but rather rugged fortresses and very interesting archaeological sites, the Iron Gates Gorge and a royal residence in Belgrade.
Jackie was born in England but grew up in Northern Rhodesia/Zambia and attended Rhodes University. She lived in Botswana for 11 years before moving to Johannesburg where she spent many years working in administration and research into medical education at Wits Medical School.
She and Neil retired to Prince Albert in 2007 and then moved to Mossel Bay in 2008. Her main interests are travel, local history and genealogy. This meeting will start at 10:30.
'How did we get here?'
At the Friday lecture on 18 November, Cassie van der Westhuizen poses the question, "So how did we get here?". This thoughtful, philosophical presentation addresses the journey of humankind from reasonably together hunter-gatherer to the out-of-mind stressed city dweller.
Refreshments will be served at 10:00, so come along and join the discussion and help solve some problems facing humanity.
Van der Westhuizen has given several interesting and humorous talks to U3A and this will be no exception.
International Affairs
Finally, on Monday, 28 November, International Affairs will be led by Natie de Swardt starting at 14:00.
