GEORGE NEWS - The Garden Route SPCA, together with EnviroVet CVC, the York High Animal Club and Plaashonde en Katte, decided to spread the love in February by hosting a sterilisation day on Tuesday 14 February.
With this amazing combined effort, a total of 50 dogs from surrounding communities were sterilised and returned to their owners.
Not only does spaying or neutering cats and dogs limit the number of unwanted pets, but reluctance to sterilise your pet could result in costly vet bills or the loss of a furry friend.
Spaying helps prevent uterine infections and breast cancer in female pets, which is fatal in about 50% of dogs and 90% of cats. Spaying your pet before her first heat offers the best protection from these diseases.

Other benefits
- Neutering provides major health benefits for your male pet. Besides preventing unwanted litters, neutering your male companion prevents testicular cancer.
- Dogs and cats that have been sterilised will also not wander around trying to find a mate.
- An intact male will do just about anything to find a mate, including digging his way under the fence to escape. Once he's free to roam, he risks injury in traffic and fights with other males. Your neutered male will be much better behaved.
- Neutered cats and dogs focus their attention on their human families. Many aggression problems can be avoided by early neutering.
- Spaying or neutering will not make your pet fat - overweight is caused by lack of exercise and overfeeding.
Learners of the York High Animal Club tended to the dogs while they woke up from anaesthesia.
