The Electro-Technical Department was faced with power lines down in several places simultaneously, mostly caused by trees falling over and pulling the lines down with them.
In the true spirit of providing excellent service delivery to the citizens of George and to reduce the overall impact of the power outages, the standby teams came up with ingenious plans to ensure that George residents still had access to electricity where feasible, while more permanent repairs were underway.
A wide area from Wilderness to Herold's Bay was affected and the municipality's call centre fielded hundreds of phone calls from concerned citizens.
Municipal staff worked from Saturday morning until the early hours of Monday morning to ensure that all repairs were completed.
Mr Kevin Grünewald, the director of Electro-Technical Services, was full of praise for the dedication and willingness of his staff who were called in to assist the on-duty team.
"The normal standby staff were unable to cope with the situation and we called in a number of additional staff to assist. All of the staff in George who we called, and who were available, sacrificed their weekend to help restore power.
"I would firstly like to thank all staff who assisted during the recent storms and also apologise to our clients for the inconvenience and thank them for their patience during outages."
Portfolio Councillor for Electro-Technical Services Wilbur Harris added his thanks to the staff for their hard work.
