GEORGE NEWS - A man from Gideon Street in Blanco was arrested on Friday 18 February on suspicion of illegal dealing in liquor.
The arrest follows a tip-off received by police from members of the community about the alleged illegal shebeen. The suspect is currently in custody and scheduled to appear in the George Magistrate’s Court once charged.
Police in the Eden Cluster has been making concerted efforts to combat and eradicate violent crime and, though the focus is on gender-based violence and femicide, the arrest was one of the positive outcomes.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson, Captain Malcolm Pojie, Pacaltsdorp Police intensified their quest to address gender-based violence through high-density patrols and the confiscation of dangerous weapons such as Okapi knives and other sharp objects that could inflict life-threatening injuries.
“Over the last few months they have already arrested more than 41 people for carrying dangerous weapons, and since December 2021 they have already disposed of hundreds of dangerous weapons that were seized during crime combatting operations,” said Pojie.
A man from Bridgton in Oudtshoorn was also arrested for illegal dealing in liquor. According to Pojie, members of the crime prevention unit in Oudtshoorn executed a search warrant on a residence in Bridgton that allegedly sold liquor illegally.
“They caught the middle-aged suspect in the act and arrested him for the illegal dealing of liquor. More than 142 litres of alcohol was found on the premises. The suspect was later released on a warning to appear in court on a later date.”
