SOUTHERN CAPE NEWS - The 2017 dotsure.co.za Polar Bear Plunge was a resounding success as over 650 blankets were collected for the less fortunate, said David Roache, MD of Dotsure. "We are so grateful for the overwhelming support that we received and are proud to be associated with the good that the Polar Bear Plunge does in the local community."
Hundreds of participants, each armed with a blanket as entrance fee, descended on Victoria Bay last Saturday 29 July to take the plunge in the warm Indian Ocean that was a rather chilly 13 degrees. Celebrity guest stars, the popular South African band Goodluck, and Miss Junior Teen SA, Monique Best, got in on the act by entertaining the crowd and taking the dreaded plunge.
The grateful recipients of the blankets, the Animal Anti Cruelty League (AACL), Rotary George and Thanda Jesu, have already set to work putting the blankets into the hands (and paws) of those that need them most. A number of corporate sponsors and local businesses also contributed to the event's immense success by donating their services, time and blankets to this worthy cause.
Roache said it was encouraging to see that the youth came out in their numbers to support the cause. "This bodes well for next year's Polar Challenge."
Go Team York!
Meagen van der Walt from York High said she swam out to the buoy (marker) and kissed it. "I think the buoy was embarrassed as it turned red after my kiss." Another Yorkie, Carmen Pollock, had challenged all her friends to get 'freezin' for a good reason.
It was a great day to be out on the beach for a good cause, and was enjoyed by young and old.
