GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - A filthy young kitten with a broken leg managed to hobble his way into the heart of his new human mom after he was found in Mossel Bay in June this year.
Asterix was three or four months old and covered in fleas when he was found all alone in a warehouse.
"Friends of ours arrived at work on a Monday morning, and found the kitten hiding behind some of their old PC stock in their warehouse," says Asterix's owner, Keisha Vermeulen from Geelhoutboom.
His rescuers couldn't keep him and decided to take him to Keisha instead. "When he arrived we could see that there was something wrong with his back leg and immediately contacted our vet. He must've been in a lot of pain, but purred his way straight into my heart," she says.
After X-rays confirmed a severe break in the kitten's back leg, the decision was made to amputate. "We really didn't have another option - the break was so severe. So we made the difficult decision to have the leg amputated and the easiest decision to keep him."
Without further adieu Asterix joined Keisha's home where two other rescued cats were already a part of the family. "We have another ginger cat named Obelix; we got him and his sister from the PDSA. So our friends named the kitten Asterix."
Keisha says Asterix is full of energy and love and is an absolute delight to have in their home.
"You would never say that he only has three legs. He has as much life and determination as the other cats. He loves to climb his cat tower and pounce on the other cats when they walk past him."
Although they will never know how his life started and when he was injured, one thing is certain: Asterix has struck gold.
