GEORGE NEWS - The swift response by Pacaltsdorp police members to information of an unlicensed firearm resulted in the confiscation of a handgun and the arrest of a 39-year-old man.
According to Warrant Officer Chris Spies, Southern Cape police spokesperson, the vigilant members received information at about 03:00 this morning regarding a vehicle which had allegedly been involved in a shooting incident.
The members deployed along Fawn Street in Pacaltsdorp.
"They spotted the vehicle, a white Toyota Hilux LDV, and brought it to a halt whereafter a search of the vehicle ensued leading to the discovery of a Norinco pistol with an empty magazine.
"The driver of the vehicle was unable to provide reasons for his possession thereof or to furnish the members with a licence. Police confiscated the firearm and arrested the man," said Spies.
The suspect remains in police custody and is expected to make his first court appearance in the George Magistrate’s court on a charge of the possession of an unlicensed firearm.
"This arrest and confiscation form part of concerted efforts by police to rid communities of unlicensed firearms which threaten the safety of the public," said Spies.
