GEORGE NEWS - A 28-year-old Nigerian national, Ernest Onvurah, has been remanded in custody following his first appearance in the Thembalethu Magistrate’s Court on Monday 21 July on a charge of dealing in drugs.
This comes after police confirmed that 4 000 Mandrax tablets with an estimated street value of R200 000 were confiscated during his arrest over the weekend, a correction from the initial estimate of 2 006 tablets valued at R20 000.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies, members of the Outeniqua K9 Unit were conducting crime prevention patrols in Ngcakani Street, Thembalethu, on Saturday 19 July when they noticed a Volkswagen Polo parked on the pavement.
“As the officers approached, a man believed to be the driver fled the scene on foot. Members gave chase and apprehended him shortly afterwards,” said Spies.
The officers returned to the vehicle and discovered a black bag containing the Mandrax tablets.
Onvurah was arrested on the scene and charged with dealing in drugs. His case was postponed to Monday 28 July 2025 for a formal bail application.
Police investigations are ongoing.
