GEORGE NEWS - All charges against five of six accused who face charges of extortion, were dropped in the George Magistrate's Court on Thursday 18 April.
This follows after the group, consisting of one woman and five men, were arrested at a house in Plattner Boulevard on Wednesday 20 March during a sting operation.
The woman, from Knysna, and two of the men, from Kuils River in Cape Town, were released on bail of R5 000 each on 28 March.
The case was then postponed for the remainder of the accused to apply for bail last Thursday.
However, after further investigation of all the evidence, the state concluded that there was insufficient reliable evidence to foresee a reasonable prospect of a successful prosecution against five of the accused at this stage.
The remaining accused, whose identity may not be revealed until he has pleaded to the charges against him, will appear for his formal bail application on Tuesday 14 May.
He remains in custody.
