For the Sunday lunch special, food lovers can expect to be served a choice of two starters; a choice of two meat dishes; four vegetables (soetpatats the way 'ouma' used to make - all deliciously caramelised), including roast potatoes. Also included in the three-course meal is a choice of two desserts including gooey chocolate cake with ice cream. The Sunday three-course meal is served from 10:00 to 14:30. "You can also place an order and take your meal home if you so desire," explained Elsabe, who is fondly known as 'Bolla' to her family and friends. "We have selected good music and are aiming to have some excellent live entertainment to create a wonderful friendly ambiance."
"We want to create a cosy and peaceful atmosphere and have some delightful options right throughout the week - from breakfast from 08:00 right through to 17:00, Monday to Friday and Sunday," said her husband Quentin, who has helped set up the new cosy decor." (On Saturdays the Smals are at the Mosaic Market in Sedgefield with their food stall).
A variety of coffees are available and Baruch's coffee beans are freshly ground for each cup. A choice of four cakes daily include carrot and chocolate cake, as well as a variety of biscuits.
The well loved George cook, Nontosi Dyonas (known for her 'Wonderpatat' when she worked for Leila's Arms) is there to assist Elsabe in creating a veritable cooking storm. Her famous spinach pie is still on the menu. But the Smals have introduced a delectable line-up of home cooked dishes including bobotie, pork and green bean stew (bredie); lamb stew or lamb curry; chicken curry; chicken pie and pork stroganoff.
