Here we are once again midsummer and all we see around George's environs are the white or purplish shaggy heads of the Pampas Grass as they steadily invade everywhere, and nothing is done about them. This South American plant produces thousands of seeds that are wind born and once established in the ground it is very difficult to remove. Its leaves are razor sharp and can also cause skin irritations. I hear George Municipality no longer has a budget for removal of invasive plants. I find this very hard to understand as the George area could be a text book illustration for almost every invasive there is in South Africa. Actually you could say that for the whole Garden Route - a complete mess of invasive plants and trees with very little biodiversity left.
