RUGBY NEWS - Stanley Kama has been a rugby coach for many years and is currently the Community Rugby assessment coach for South Western Districts (SWD).
In September, SWD held a tournament for children aged 14 to 15 years in Knysna, where schools from Knysna, Mossel Bay, Plettenberg Bay and Oudtshoorn took part.
Kama says many injuries occurred during the tournament, which could have been avoided with proper rugby coaching and training techniques. "There were no qualified coaches at the tournament, which is actually illegal."
Kama is concerned about the lack of qualified rugby coaches, who should be able to interpret the game and rules correctly.
The SWD Community Rugby assessment projects offer courses to teachers who are actively involved in training rugby players from Grade R to senior level. This initiative is part of the BokSmart National Rugby Safety Programme - a joint rugby safety project between SA Rugby and the Chris Burger/Petro Jackson Players' Fund, which started in South Africa in 2009.
Kama says SWD is planning a coaching project for early next year, before the rugby season starts in April.
Schools and coaches interested in giving their players the best opportunity to become well-rounded rugby players should contact Kama (081 090 6923).
