SPORT NEWS - York High School hosted a memorable derby against Alexander Road High School - fondly known as 'Alex' - on 10 and 11 April, with a packed programme of netball, rugby and hockey played on York's Quarry and sports fields, and chess played in the school building.
To keep the spirits high, Alex brought along a full orchestra that added to the festive energy.

"The derby has been running for over 10 years between the two schools.
"It provides a wonderful opportunity for the learners to compete across the various winter sporting codes and creates a competitive yet respectful atmosphere in which to play sport," said York High's hockey coach, Jason Slater.
"The derby is about far more than just results. Learners from the catering, hospitality, first aid and marketing panel also play an important role and share in the success on the day."
On the field
York High delivered strong performances across multiple codes. Hockey proved particularly successful, with the first team girls securing an emphatic 5-0 win.
The second team girls (6-0), U16A boys (9-0), U16A girls (4-0), U16B girls (2-0) and U14A girls (5-0) all recorded convincing victories. The first team boys played to a competitive 2-2 draw.

Netball fixtures produced a mix of results, including a nail-biting 20-20 draw for the U18A side, after which Andrea Machelm and Katelyn Botes were named the players of the match.
The U15A team stood out with a dominant 27-10 win, while the U14B and U14C teams also secured solid victories. Several players earned player of the match honours, including Liyabona Jantjies, Minenhle Mlhize, Ovayo Mlumbi, Madison Smith, Buhle Ncama, Ella Kearns, Taylin Petersen and Layla Janse van Rensburg.

Rugby delivered its usual excitement, with York's first team edging Alex out 15-14 in a closely contested match. The second team (5-3), U16A (29-5) and U15A (27-15) also posted wins, while the U14A side fell short against a strong Alex outfit.

In the chess arena, York narrowly claimed victory, winning 18 games to Alex's 15.
