GEORGE NEWS - Minke Janse van Rensburg (20), a swimmer with Down syndrome, received a hero’s welcome at George Airport on Sunday, 31 August, following her remarkable performance at the 2025 Virtus World Swimming Championships in Bangkok, Thailand.
Minke set seven new world records and brought home an incredible haul of six gold, two silver and three bronze medals. Friends and family gathered at the airport to celebrate her return.
Balloons, soft toys and flowers - as well as the smiles of all her favourite people - lit up Minke’s face as she posed for photos with her fans.
Her swim coach, Josua Vorster, and his father, Franna Vorster, owner of the Garden Route Swim School, were among the first to welcome her home. The Vorsters agreed that Minke delivered the performance of a lifetime at this world-renowned event.
Minke also reunited with her longtime friend, Savanna Haselau, who now lives in KwaZulu-Natal. The two friends joined forces as part of a South African relay team alongside swimmers from Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.
