GEORGE NEWS - Seven athletes from the Eden District have been included in the national team to participate in the Laser-Run World Championships in Ireland.
More than 500 participants from all over the world will be representing more than 50 countries in the event, which will be held from 28 to 30 September.
Each athlete is personally responsible for their own tour cost and the athletes of Eden Modern Pentathlon Association (MPA) are very thankful to George Municipality and Garden Route District Council that made sponsorship available to four Laser-Run athletes from George and three from Mossel Bay to participate at the championships.
The Laser-Run is a relatively new concept launched by the International Modern Pentathlon Federation (UIPM) in 2015 as part of their international competition calendar. It is a sub sport of the Modern Pentathlon and although a world class sport, not an Olympic one. Participants start with a short sprint to the shooting range.
From there, using a laser pistol, they shoot at their designated target until they register 5 successful hits, or for 50 seconds, whichever comes first.
They will then leave the range and run a 400/800m circuit, returning to the shooting range for round two of the shoot. They complete this circuit four times, alternating between running and shooting.
Last year's silver medallist at the World Championship, Neytwin Laminie, still needs sponsorship. Any donations will be gladly appreciated.
Eden MPA's new season starts in November and anyone interested in joining this fast-growing sport can contact chairperson Ulene Visser at edenmpa.chairman@gmail.com.
