GEORGE NEWS - Surfers and surf fans alike are gearing up for the 49th annual Vic Bay Quad taking place at Victoria Bay this weekend, from 2 to 4 May.
Bringing together teams from five of South Africa’s eight surfing districts, including Eden, Boland, Western Cape, Border and the Eastern Province, this iconic surfing competition is not only a premier regional contest on Surfing South Africa’s calendar, but also a celebration of our nation’s vibrant surf culture.
Featuring various age and gender divisions, ranging from men’s and women’s opens to over 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s, the contest brings together multiple generations of surfers, providing a platform for seasoned veterans to showcase their talent while inspiring the next generations.
In doing this, the event highlights the longevity of competitive sport and the impact of role models in surfing. It also showcases high-performance surfing, while at the same time supporting the local economy and showcasing Victoria Bay as one of South Africa’s premier surf destinations.
As one of the most consistent right-hand point breaks along the South African coastline, seasoned frothers and stokeys have described Vic Bay as a small-scale classic setup, offering surfers a wide open canvas on which to showcase their skill and talent.
With fresh swell expected later in the week, the stage is set for an epic showdown, especially in the early stages of competition.
The current forecast is for the swell to start dropping off on Saturday afternoon, with smaller conditions expected on Sunday.
With a range of attractions ancillary to the surfing action and Vic Bay as a venue, the weekend promises to be a fun-filled celebration of surf culture with plenty on offer for competitors and spectators alike.
