GEORGE NEWS - To realise a dream to represent South Africa in the green and gold at an international sport event, a former York High pupil, Nathan Heggie (24), needs funding.
He will represent South Africa on 4 September at the World Duathlon Championships in Zofingen, Switzerland as part of the SA Triathlon team.
Distances can vary a little each year depending on the specific course, and this year's event in Switzerland consists of 10km running, 145km cycling and 30km running with no breaks.
As a youngster Heggie lived in Sedgefield and completed Grades 8, 9 and 10 at York High. He finished Grades 11 and 12 at Graeme College in Grahamstown. He is currently a final year law student at Rhodes.
It was the Bayethe Multisport Academy in Mossel Bay that motivated him to start participating in duathlon a few years ago. Nathan qualified for the world championships at the SA Championships last year.
He told George Herald on Tuesday it is a dream come true. "I always wanted to wear the green and gold, but I didn't know in which sport I was going to make it."
He needs money for equipment as well as travelling expenses and is trying to raise R20 000. At the moment he has R6 000.
"Fundraising has been difficult because I am studying in the morning and practising in the afternoon." Nathan has a Backabuddy campaign to raise the necessary funds and he can be followed on his Facebook page.
