GEORGE NEWS - Eden Disc Golf will be hosting its local annual Disc Golf Tournament at Rooirivierrif sport grounds on 28 and 29 April.
Their inaugural Outeniqua Open 2024 attracted 40 competitors among whom were some of the best players in South Africa. "We are very happy to have SHE Group in George sponsor us for our second national event, and hope to deliver on the success we had last year," says Leon Strauss, chairman of Outeniqua Disc Golf.
The Outeniqua Open 2025 will consist of two 18-hole rounds, on the afternoon of Sunday 27 April and morning of Monday 28 April (Freedom Day). The lowest total score determines the winner in each division.
"The new course layout will allow for advanced, intermediate and beginner players to participate competitively in disc golf. George has the most competitive junior division in the country and we are actively promoting participation among younger players," says Strauss.
Included in the ticket price is an optional Glow Round on Sunday evening as well as a social braai at the Rooirivierrif clubhouse where everyone will play a round with glow-in-the-dark discs, which is bound to be a fun event for all involved.
Disc Golf shares many rules with golf, but instead of changing clubs players change discs that they throw towards a disc golf basket, consisting of a pole with chains hanging from an upper band to catch the discs. The sport has grown to more than 16 000 courses worldwide, available in 91 countries.
The course at Rooirivierrif is a beautiful venue for players.
Strauss says they have hosted many international players in George, mostly here on holiday, and have the potential to grow into a world class disc golf destination.
Disc golf in George has developed rapidly in the past three years with local players driving the growth to establish Rooirivierrif as a world class destination for the sport.
They now have a full course at Rooirivierrif, which provides a free-to-play disc golf course for anybody to participate in.
"Rooirivierrif is the second most played course in South Africa. We encourage George residents to join us at our regular outings or even follow the course layout available on the Udisc app. A frisbee can be used to play the course."
Three permanent baskets have been installed at Rooirivierrif thanks to a donation from Disc Golf South Africa, allowing for anybody to experience the full experience of disc golf.
