DISC GOLF NEWS - Disc Golf George (DGG) completed its spring league competition by mid-November last year.
The winners were Ingo Hilbert won MA1, Bernadette Richter FA2, Gary Knoetze MA3 and Heathe Hilbert in the junior division (MAJ16).
The local players have shown great development in their skills this past spring league and the club is seeing increased interest in George.
DGG has been hosting regular events over weekends for their Plate Challenge where the lowest par score of the day takes home the plate and then nominates the next Plate Challenge.
This has proven very successful and competitors playing in different divisions play from different tee positions relative to their skill levels.
A few newcomers have started playing in the past few months and they already have the skills to be competitive at events.
PDGA-sanctioned Outeniqua Open in March
Disc Golf George started planning its Inaugural Outeniqua Open towards the end of last year and booking is now open.
It will be their first national Professional Disc Golf Association sanctioned event (PDGA). It will be held on 16 March at the Rooirivierrif sports grounds.
PDGA sanctioning allows disc golf players from all over the world to receive professional ratings depending on their performance at a sanctioned event.
DGG sees this event as a positive step towards developing disc golf in George to potentially become an established disc golf destination for national and international tourists.
PDGA players often make disc golf courses part of their tourist routes, especially if they could improve their PDGA rankings while visiting some of our country's most beautiful destinations.
Competition details
Disc Golf South Africa has been very supportive and has managed to secure DGG a sponsorship from Discmania, one of the world's leading disc manufacturers.
DGG has redesigned their course layout for this event and will cater for mixed (MA1 - MA4) and female amateur divisions (FA1 - FA4) that will be challenging to the club's experienced players as well as fun for new players.
The junior divisions will be split into Mixed Amateur Junior for under 16 (MAJ16) and under-10-year-olds (MAJ10).
There will be three different tee positions per hole, allowing for all levels of players to enjoy this groundbreaking event in George.
It will be a full-day event with registration from 08:00. The best average score over two will determine the winners.
There will also be some sideline competitions and, thanks to DGG's sponsors, an exciting player pack for each and prizes for the competitors.
Being the club's inaugural event and thanks to sponsorship, Outeniqua Open registration will be at a reduced fee of R250 for adults and R100 for the junior division.

Increasing interest
It is one of DGG's primary goals to develop disc golf skills in the junior divisions, and developing disc golf in George to be a family-friendly activity. DGG is hoping to attract some national players and to grow this event into a regular item on the Disc Golf South Africa (DGSA) calendar.
DGG is very grateful for its sponsors and the support of Disc Golf South Africa building up to host this event.
Anybody interested in booking for Outeniqua Open can request to join the DGG WhatsApp group on 082 330 3966 or follow their Facebook page for regular updates.
With seven weeks to go before tee-off, the club would love to see more new players joining them in preparation for Outeniqua Open.
