Twenty teams from George, plus four each from Uniondale and Wilderness, will start playing each other on a knock-out basis from 21 to 30 March when the finals will be played at the Lawaaikamp FNB stadium.
The winning team will receive a soccer kit and the runner-up a voucher from the sponsor Top Gear Sports Shop in Hibernia Street. Ters Giliomee, the owner of Top Gear, added that in addition to the main prize there will be vouchers for the top goal scorer and the player of the tournament.
Kidron Kaboni, the project coordinator and sport official of the George Municipality, announced that the 'Mayor's Cup', sponsored by the municipality, will be played in June. To enhance football in the area, the u.13 and u.15 boys and girls teams will also be encouraged to participate.
Kaboni appealed to the soccer fraternity to practice as this will strengthen his hand when negotiating with the German funders who he says are weighing up their options of further investments in the area. "Last month we opened two of the four kick-about facilities allocated to George, one in Thembalethu and the other in New Dawn Park that was funded to the value of R5-million by the German Federal Government."
Monwabisi Make, the deputy chairman of Geolfa, says that he is pleased that football is starting to make massive advances in the Eden District.
"The sponsorship of the various tournaments means that Southern Cape football will become a force to be reckoned with in the future. We are hoping to produce more Lennox Bacela's soon." Bacela, who comes from George, is a regular in the Orlando Pirates team.
