CRICKET NEWS - There has been lots of exciting cricket action in regional cricket last weekend, 11 and 12 October. Meanwhile, some achievements were made in the coaching and U19 departments. Here are some highlights:
• The Garden Route Badgers Women (237/9) stunned their WSB Western Province counter-parts (162 all out) with a comprehensive 75-run victory in their Hollywoodbets Pro 50 series match at the Recreation Ground in Oudtshoorn on Saturday 11 October.
• In the Pro20 match on Sunday 12 October, Western Province scored 123/8, whereafter the Badgers responded with 101 (all out). Western Province won by 22 runs.
• The first round of matches in the SWDC Premier League was contested last weekend. The newly promoted New Dawn Park (96 all out) faced an uphill battle against Pacaltsdorp United (334/9) and lost by 238 runs. For Pacaltsdorp United, Elih Thorne was outstanding with figures of 5/42.
• After an impressive start to the season, the Garden Route Badgers are set to host the Mpumalanga Rhinos in Oudtshoorn in the Cricket SA Division 2 Four-day competition. The match will start on Thursday and promises to be an epic battle. After one match each, the Rhinos are second on the log on 26.12 points and the Badgers third on 23.58 points. Eastern Storm on 28.2 points after two matches are the log leaders.
• One of SWD's top cricket umpires, Lyndon Volkwyn, has completed the Cricket SA Level IV national certificate. This is the top umpire qualification in the country and will allow Volkwyn, a former first-class cricket player, to be added as a CSA panel umpire.
• Three promising SWD U19 players recently represented the Cricket South Africa Hub invitational XI in the annual Oppenheimer Michealmas Cricket Week at Michaelhouse in KwaZulu-Natal. They were Enathi Kitshini, Keano Coerecius and Kurt Botha.
