GEORGE NEWS - The hills and backroads of Great Brak River came alive on New Year's Eve as a record 1 800 participants - plus a cheerful pack of dogs - took part in the 22nd edition of the Grootbrak Grabadoo (GBG).
Starting from the Great Brak sports-grounds, the popular year-end run, walk and cycling event once again delivered something for everyone, but it was the new Race Village concept that turned GBG25 into a celebration that lasted long after the finish line.
Race director Alewijn Dippenaar said the relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere was a standout feature. "With boerie rolls, pancakes by the DR Church ladies, coffee, sweet treats and even a Devil's Peak beer for adults, people simply stayed on. Music by Marius du Bruyn created an incredible vibe - no one was in a rush to go home.
"Excitement peaked when an Avalanche bicycle raffle sold out within minutes, while feedback from participants praised clear route signage, well-stocked water points and the visible presence of nearly 32 marshals at crossings.
"The marshals, water point teams and medical staff were exceptional," Dippenaar said. "Even the last finishers were well catered for, and any minor falls were handled immediately by Frontier Medics.
"Strong support also came from local schools, volunteers, sponsors and traffic officials, ensuring safety and smooth operations throughout."
Mossel Bay's Mayor Dirk Kotzé added to the festive spirit by completing the 58km cycle, while his wife, Riëtte, joined the walkers.
The participants once again received the event's popular buffs and medals, while Dippenaar highlighted the growing number of youngsters and families as a sign of the GBG's unique appeal.
"There is no other race like this in South Africa," he said.
"With walkers and cyclists split almost evenly, the GBG25 proved that the last day of the year can be both active and unforgettable - a flagship event for Great Brak and the Garden Route."
