GEORGE NEWS - They are young, caring and enthusiastic, and every Wednesday afternoon, they are out and about in a group doing some good.
This is the York High Interact Club, a group of girls whose hearts are truly into serving the community.
On Wednesday 27 August, they got together at the Meals on Wheels (MOW) premises at the George East Seventh Adventist Church to pack 100 nutritious glass-bottled meals that were to be handed out at the Rosemoor Home for the Aged and Rosemoor Crèche yesterday (3 September).
Each bottle makes a tasty, nourishing meal of six to eight portions, and they are easy to cook.
The bottles were collected from the public and the contents - lentils, rice, soup mix and flavourings - were donated by each grade's learners and their parents, as well as the George Rotary Club, which sponsors the Interact Club.
This collaboration with MOW was Interacter Gemma Potgieter's idea. Her grandmother, Cora Fourie, and mother, Marie, have been involved in the management of the MOW outreach in George for many years.
Marlene Botha, one of the lead teachers of the Interact Club, said this is the third year they had packed and distributed these bottled meals. In the past, the ACVV, Rosemoor Old Age Home and Rosemoor Service Centre for Seniors have all been beneficiaries.
"Our Interacters eagerly take part in an outreach every Wednesday afternoon. They visit Carpe Diem School and Pacaltsdorp Crèche to play with the children, and also the Rosemoor Old Age Home where they do nail and hand treatments for the ladies and play cards or dominoes with the men. They have also been to Emmaüs to teach some of the residents to do beadwork."
