Anton Bredell, Western Cape minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, has confirmed that according to the figures phoned in to him, the DA has won most of the councils in the Southern Cape.
He confirmed that unofficial figures indicate that the DA won Bitou with around 51% of the votes. Knysna has been won by the DA. In Kannaland Icosa has 48% of the vote so far in the count.
It seems as if the DA has lost Hessequa but this is not yet confirmed, although the ANC has claimed victory. It would appear that Louis Botha, a former DA Western Cape leader’s son, who stood as an independent (not affiliated to any party) gave Hessequa to the ANC.
This means that although Botha did well, he did not win the ward as an independent’s votes don’t count for PR seat allocation. Botha took votes away from the DA and the DA more than likely lost a PR seat.
Bredell said the problem is that there are no audited figures yet.
