5 nabbed in brazen attempt to defraud Sars of millions

NATIONAL NEWS - The South African Revenue Service (Sars) has foiled an attempt to swindle it out of millions through a tax fraud scam. This resulted in the arrest of five people at its head offices in Pretoria.

Sars says a Pretoria-based company claimed to have paid R266 million in salaries to its employees - and wanted to claim value added tax on that amount.

But suspicious officials requested supporting documents, including payslips, only to discover that they were fraudulent.

Sars's Luther Lebelo says they then set up a sting operation with police.
